T-Ballers finish 1-4 states

Published:

The second-year Spring Hill T-Ball (ages 5-6) All-Stars suffered through a sophomore jinx.

The West Hernando County crew, which debuted as state runners-up in 2013 in Sebring, was eliminated at the conclusion of Dixie State Tournament pool play this week.

As the five-day, 12-team event wrapped up late Wednesday evening at Mulberry Park, Wesley Chapel rallied for five runs in its last at-bats to trim Sebring for its third state crown, 16-15.

Wesley Chapel (14-2 overall) finished 9-1 at states to claim the fourth state crown in this age group from District 6 across five seasons.

The lone Hernando County entry, skipper Dave Lawson’s Spring Hill club, was not able to advance past Monday’s pool play into the final four-team bracket.

Spring Hill (3-7 overall) was eliminated after finishing 1-4 in three days of pool action in Polk County.

Lawson’s club opened with an encouraging 28-4 pasting of winless Freeport, before dropping its last four tilts to Hardee County (21-5), West Seminole (18-7), West Volusia (13-10) and Wildwood (23-8).

The West Hernando County crew, which placed fourth during the District 6 Tournament at Wildwood, was ultimately outscored, 79-58.

The major issue, according to Coach Lawson, was the lack of offensive punch.

“We simply didn’t hit enough,” defended Lawson. “I wish I knew exactly why we didn’t hit like we did in Wildwood. Our defense didn’t kill us. It seemed like we’d play well until the last inning of every game and then run out of juice.”

Lawson wasn’t surprised that Wesley Chapel and Sebring battled to the end for the title.

“Nothing against anyone else, but those were the two best teams in Mulberry,” noted Lawson. “After seeing Wesley Chapel a few times, those guys can mash.”

Describing the experience, “Looking back, the kids had a great time,” said Lawson. “Honestly, I thought we’d fair better than we did, but that’s ball. This year, we didn’t have one kid back from last year’s team.

“If we weren’t the youngest team there, we were real close. We played seven 5-year-olds. Next year, we’ll have 4-5 of those kids back,” detailed Lawson. “And that should help us a lot.”

Lawson indicated how difficult this week’s tournament was, saying, “The best team from our pool was West Volusia and they didn’t even get into the final four. This was tough and the weather played havoc with the schedule.

“I think the kids enjoyed the experience and I believe they were all thankful for the opportunity to play,” added Coach Lawson.
