WEEKI WACHEE – The Weeki Wachee Hornets started the season off strong with a resounding victory over the Interlachen Rams Friday night at the Hornets Nest.
The Hornets’ offense was explosive putting 42 points on the board before the half with quarterback Alec Cromie throwing for five touchdowns, picking apart the Rams’ pass coverage.
Weeki Wachee (1-0) was also supported by a solid defense that held Interlachen to only 60 yards of total offense.
Cromie and running back Shawn O’Gorman were essential to the Hornets’ strong performance on offense with Cromie throwing for 152 yards and O’Gorman rushing for 100 yards.
O’Gorman also caught two of Cromie’s passes for touchdowns.
“It was a great performance tonight. I was excited about the touchdowns,” said Cromie, “We get to enjoy the victory but then we got to get ready for the next team and get better”.
Weeki Wachee head coach Mark Lee was satisfied with the way his team performed, especially the defense.
“We had some mistakes early on, especially with penalties, but after that we settled down and executed,” said Lee. “The defense did great, played aggressive and physical, really set the tone for the game and allowed us to make chances.”
Several miscues by the Interlachen offense allowed Weeki Wachee to capitalize. The Hornets pounced on poor snaps and miscommunication and recovered two fumbles in Interlachen territory.
The Hornets also took advantage of a punt block in the first quarter allowing their offense to start deep in the Rams’ territory, which ultimately led to a rushing touchdown from O’Gorman.
O’Gorman also returned the second-half kickoff 80 yards for what appeared to be another Weeki Wachee touchdown, but the play was called back for an illegal block.
The second half didn’t provide much action from either team because of a running clock.
The Hornets looked to strike again near the end of the game but an interception by Interlachen’s Darius Oliver off Cromie put an end to the Weeki Wachee threat.
A minor error in regards to an overall, impressive performance by the Weeki Wachee offense that amounted to 258 yards of total offense
Weeki Wachee will look to build on this victory when it takes on Springstead next Friday in Spring Hill.
