Weeki Wachee's season ends at Fivay

HUDSON - In what was Weeki Wachee's first team appearance in regionals in any sport, it ended too soon.

Weeki Wachee was not able to rebound from a couple of early deficits in the first two sets against host Fivay, as the Lady Hornets were downed, 16-25, 13-25, 22-25, in a Class 5A, Region II quarterfinal matchup Tuesday night.

"The first two games really had to do with the nerves," Weeki Wachee head coach Kelly Werkmeister said. "In that third game the girls were really able to settle in, but Fivay came out on fire. We had a great season looking back on everything. We were the first sport in the school's short history to reach the playoffs. We'll be back next season."

The Lady Falcons (23-6) had to get through the Lady Hornets (16-11) before thinking about facing anyone in the region semifinals, as Fivay seemingly dominated the first two sets with sisters Ashleigh (13 kills) and Briannah Nemetz (eight kills) leading the way.

The third and eventual final set, though, would not be in any way as easy, as Weeki Wachee stormed back behind the play of Miranda Werkmeister (12 digs) and Zoe Murchio (eight digs).

The Lady Hornets came to within 24-22 and the Lady Falcons chose to call a timeout, but on the very next serve Ashleigh Nemetz would knock down a kill to close out the game.

"It's been a goal of ours to make it through regionals, so we're taking it one game at a time," Fivay head coach Nikki Pollock said. "We're excited to get back to the region semifinals and find out who we play."

Fivay will face district-rival Anclote, which defeated Hernando on Tuesday, in a rematch of the 5A-District 8 championship game in next Tuesday's semifinals.
