A pregnant Citrus County woman and the child she was carrying have died after the woman was shot in the head in what Hernando deputies are calling an accident at a friend’s home in Brooksville.

Doctors at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point tried to save the 5-month-old fetus by removing him from Katherine Lynn Hoover, 25, at 7:54 p.m. Saturday, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. The boy was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m., deputies said. Hoover was pronounced dead at 3:04 a.m., deputies said.

The shooting happened Saturday evening while Hoover and her husband Carson Hoover, of Inverness, were visiting friends in Brooksville, deputies said.

As William DeHayes, of 20079 Suncrest Drive, was showing the Hoovers his gun collection, a .22 caliber revolver discharged, hitting Katherine Hoover in the head, deputies said.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a call from DeHayes’ house about the shooting, at 6:43 p.m. Saturday.

Hoover was taken to Bayfront Health Brooksville by Hernando County Fire/Rescue then airlifted to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting appeared to be accidental, deputies say.

The investigation is ongoing.

Carson Hoover is “very distraught” said Gregory Stewart, whose daughter used to date Hoover.

“I just got off the phone with him,” said Stewart. “He is very upset and going through the range of emotions a normal person would. He’s not sleeping, very traumatized.”

Hoover, a heavy equipment driver, “is a great, hard-working guy,” said Stewart. “This is apparently one of those unfortunate incidents.”

Stewart said that his daughter dated Carson Hoover until June of 2013. He did not know Katherine Hoover.

“Carson is an all-around nice guy and a very good family man,” said Stewart. “He has two children now he still has to take care of. That will be difficult.”
