A pregnant woman was in serious condition at a Tampa hospital after she and a child were ejected from a stolen Toyota pickup in a crash Wednesday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the pickup fled after the truck flipped several times at Powell Road and Raines Road in Brooksville, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

The woman and child were ejected and were in the road when law enforcement responded, records said. The crash happened about 10 p.m.

A sheriff’s helicopter helped locate the pickup, driven by Charles Daniel Aaron, 44, who drove the damaged pickup west on Powell and onto Elgin Boulevard; he did not stop when ground units tried to stop him, records said.

Aaron continued to flee, even after running over “stop sticks” that shredded the truck’s tires, records said.

The Toyota stopped in a yard on Prespare Road, but when deputies approached, Aaron accelerated again, records said. Aaron pulled over at Northcliffe Boulevard and Century Drive, but he refused to exit the pickup, records said.

A Hernando K-9 unit, Judge Topper, grabbed Aaron’s left forearm and got him from the pickup, which was stolen from Ocala, records show. Aaron was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the dog bite.

There was a warrant for Aaron’s arrest from the Florida Parole Commission for violating the terms of conditional release on a burglary charge, and records showed his driver’s license was revoked in 1996 for DUI, deputies said.

Aaron was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, and driving while license is suspended or revoked. Bail was set at $15,000.

The highway patrol is investigating.
