A server's black book, lighter, stick of deodorant and hooded sweatshirt lay next to a wrecked scooter in the middle of U.S. 19 in Spring Hill on Wednesday.
Hernando County Sheriff Deputy Chris Croft said the motorist was riding his scooter south on U.S. 19 in the left lane when he was struck by a turning SUV. The man slid off his scooter and under the other vehicle.
Neighborhood bystanders said it would be a miracle if the motorist survived the crash, and added the intersection — U.S. 19 at William Street by the Outback Steakhouse — is a frequent accident spot.
Croft was not sure if the scooter driver was wearing a helmet, but due to the multiple injuries to the driver's face, he suspected not.
Croft said the man was in trauma and transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point with serious injuries.
Florida Highway Patrol took over the crash that evening, according to Croft.
