BROOKSVILLE -

A Tampa man died from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon, troopers said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Theo E. Angelakos, 52, was riding his 2002 Triumph west along Powell Road. As he was about to ride through the Emerson Road intersection, a Mercedes sedan made a left turn and crossed into his path, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers didn't confirm Angelakos' death until Thursday morning because it took several days for his next of kin in New Jersey to be notified, an FHP spokesman said.

The Mercedes was driven by Stephen Lee Vickers, 58, of Brooksville. Troopers said Angelakos' motorcycle struck the right front panel of Vickers' car.

The crash closed both lanes of Powell for more than an hour, according to an accident report.

Angelakos, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and died later that day.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, according to FHP.

Troopers are still investigating.
