Civic activist Janey Baldwin left a mark on the community

The issue: Remembering Janey Baldwin's efforts to make Hernando County a better place.

Our opinion: The county needs more people like Baldwin to take an active role in the community.

A word to perhaps describe the recently passed Janey Baldwin could be tenacious.

She held some very strong beliefs and was very persistent in trying to further and articulate those beliefs. While many disagreed with her positions and how she went about presenting them, she must be congratulated for her dedication in trying to improve conditions in the county.

She was a tireless worker who served on several boards giving of herself to work toward improving things in Hernando. She should be heralded as a "civic activist" who took strong positions but never for any reason other than she believed in them.

While not always on mark, she at least made an attempt and others should look at that as an example of how to get involved in community matters.

She was a regular at County Commission meetings where she often spoke under citizen input and was not in the least intimidated when she challenged county government.

It would serve our democracy well for more people to take an active role in challenging the process of government and doing it in a civil and respectful manner.

Janey will be missed at the government meetings, but she has left a legacy that others should pick up and continue.
