Road conditions in the area of Powell Road east of U.S. 41 have deteriorated.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office has closed the roadway because it is unsafe to travel, according to a media release.

Motorists are advised to find alternate routes around the area until the roadway can be assessed and repaired.

Several homes near that intersection were severely damaged due to Tropical Storm Debby, which dumped between 15 to 20 inches of rain in some parts of Hernando earlier this week.

The Florida Department of Transportation announced Friday it had closed the south outside and middle lanes along U.S. 19 a short distance south of Spring Hill Drive due to a depression in the roadway.

Crews were at the site investigating and doing repair work shortly after noon.
