Spring Hill Garden Club recognizes volunteers Jeanne Erickson, manager of the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens, as the club's Volunteer of the Month for June. Her husband, Jim Erickson, was selected as Volunteer of the Month for July.
The Ericksons moved to Spring Hill from Louisville, Ky., in 1994 and joined the Spring Hill Garden Club the same year. Jeanne has been a secretary and director of the club for four terms and Jim has served as vice president and president.
They were members of the Landmark Spring Hill Waterfall Committee for ten years, serving as chairpersons for seven of those years. As manager of the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens, Jeanne is responsible for overseeing 23 individual gardens, which involves designing, planting, weeding, and pruning the gardens, in addition to conducting tours and purchasing supplies. Jim serves as her right-hand man and they are often joined by their daughters, Kathie and Merry, who also are volunteers. The Ericksons enjoy learning about Florida gardening, working with volunteers and providing a beautiful environment for residents and visitors to the area to enjoy. Jim especially likes to welcome volunteers and visitors, always with a big, infectious smile.
The Nature Coast Botanical Gardens is located at 1489 Parker Ave. in Spring Hill, adjacent to the club's Plant Nursery. The gardens are open daily from sunup to sundown and while admission is free, donations are greatly appreciated. The plant nursery, adjacent to the gardens, is open from 9 a.m. until noon on Mondays and Saturdays. Plants that grow well in this area are sold at reasonable prices and volunteers are on hand to assist residents in selecting the right plant for the right location.
