Adam J. Craig said his father struck him with a wooden ax handle, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said they interviewed John Robert Craig Jr., Adam's father, and he told them his son had hit him with a TV tray and a wooden back scratcher.
In the end, both men were arrested on charges of aggravated battery.
Adam, 30, and John, 57, both of 7165 Algonquin St., were transported to the Hernando County Jail. They were booked shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday and held without bond.
Deputies said they first encountered Adam, who had several cuts on his face and head. He told them he had returned home from a day of boating when his father met him at the front door, yelled at him and struck him several times with the wooden handle, according to an arrest affidavit.
The metal part of the ax was not attached, deputies said.
Adam refused to talk about the incident further once he signed a written statement, according to reports.
Deputies said when they interviewed John, he told them his son had instigated the fight. Adam came home, called his girlfriend on the phone, slammed a door out of anger, hurled the phone at his father and then hit him with the tray and back scratcher, according to John's statements to the sheriff's office.
John denied hitting his son with the ax handle, but didn't elaborate, deputies said.
Adam's injuries were to his face. John's injuries were to his left arm, back and face, according to reports.
Both men refused medical treatment.
