Springstead, Senior

COMMENTS: First-year varsity player … First-time All-County selection … Finished fourth in the Hernando County scoring race with 28 points … Tallied 12 goals … If opposing teams attempted to collapse on Matt Campbell or Cody Emmerman, Szafranski acted as an effective sniper.

QUOTES: "Played on our JV team as a freshman and then I didn’t see him for two years. … He did play on the same club team with several of our players before deciding to return (to the varsity level). … What I liked most? He came in focused and ready to play. … He’s a not a true striker. … He reads the game pretty well to create his scoring chances. … Has an uncanny knack of knowing exactly where to be."

QUOTES: "Barely played for us (one goal, one assist) in 2010-11 due to severe knee injury. … Has good vision and knows how to distribute the ball. … Doesn’t get a lot of goals, but excels in reading the game. … Is more of a defensive midfielder."

- Springstead head coach Sal Calabrese

Justin Ladouceur
Midfielder

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … Played on the varsity level for four seasons. … Was a late bloomer, blossoming as a junior and then as a senior … Went from scoring 16 points as a junior to cracking Hernando County Honor Roll in 2011-12 and finishing eighth overall with 20 points.

QUOTES: "Played with our core group of guys on the same club team. … Justin’s an athletic player. … His left peg is as good as it gets. … Not afraid of pressure. … Scored big goals to tie or win matches; he did that a few times."

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … Was invisible in 2010-11. QUOTES: "He’s one of those guys that run under the radar. … His biggest gift? He’s a very smart player. … He’ll be our No. 1 (scoring) option next year. … Like most guys, his biggest hurdle is learning to finish off opportunities. … Doesn’t have the hunger that (Andres) Pinzon had near the goal, but that’s so hard to teach."

- Hernando head coach Andy Suarez

Josh Fleischer
Defender

Hernando, Senior

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … The tenacious Fleischer was one of the primary reasons the Leopards permitted 2.17 goals per game this past winter – their best total in nearly two decades.

QUOTES: "Josh’s presence was huge for us. He was our stopper. … I just wish I had him for one more season. … He didn’t play dirty; he played the game hard."

- Hernando head coach Andy Suarez

Cameron McGeehan
Defender

Central, Senior

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … One of the few bright spots on a team decimated by injuries and graduations from the 2010-11 district championship team … Due to lack of defenders, CHS opted to switch McGeehan from forward to defender to slow down opposing teams … Led the punchless Bears (CHS tallied 21 goals in 17 matches) in scoring with five goals and 10 points.

QUOTES: "He came to us late. He was planning to play JV as a junior, but we saw something in him and brought him up to the varsity for seasoning. Looking back, thank goodness we did that move; it paid dividends for us this year. …  He was our captain. … He’s a well-rounded, all-purpose player. … I didn’t want to sacrifice him offensively, but we needed him so much on defense that we made the move."

- Central head coach Alex Viramontes

Harry Prentice
Defender

Springstead, Senior

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … Was a mainstay on the Eagles’ special teams, especially on designed corner kicks … Could thread a pass with accuracy … Finished second in the county in assists (10) behind NCT’s Eric MacLean (15) … Another four-year letterman for the Eagles.

QUOTES: "Harry provided an attack from the outside. … He excelled on quality crosses. … Was one of our go-to guys on designed corner kicks. … Was tremendous at placing the ball wherever we wanted it inside the 18."

- Springstead head coach Sal Calabrese

Spyros Kouraras
Defender

Springstead, Senior

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … Moved in fromGreece … Blended in with teammates quickly … May have been the Eagles’ primary defender … He was one of the prime reasons SHS permitted a county-low 18 goals in 22 matches.

QUOTES: "When he got here his fitness was horrible and he complained of his calf muscles cramping up in the heat. … I don’t believe he was ready to play three times a week here in Florida. … Once he got fit, he played an outstanding outside back. … He knows the game and is strictly a defender. … What I liked most? He knows how to challenge an attacker."

- Springstead head coach Sal Calabrese

Jordan Leathers
Goalkeeper

QUOTES: "Jordan wasn’t really tested all season. … The first 20 minutes of theFlemingIsland (regional semifinal) game was a whole new experience toJordan and our defense (SHS yielded a season-high four goals before not allowing another score). … What impressed me wasJordan worked really hard to get his grades up. … During the regular season he made some saves when we really needed them."

- Springstead head coach Sal Calabrese

Player of the Year

QUOTES: "Been fortunate to coach some great players in 28 seasons (including 19 at SHS) and Matt is one of the best. … He gave up pursuing baseball in his senior year to concentrate on soccer. He focused everything he had in soccer and I think it paid off. … He’s much better, technically speaking, than he was when he arrived. … He was the heart and soul of our team. He’s probably the toughest guy to replace since Steven (Bates). … He was one of our captains and held team meetings. … Maybe the best thing I’ve seen is that he was a great teammate."

- Springstead head coach Sal Calabrese

"After both times we played Springstead he was clearly the best player on the field. … He knew how to distribute the ball. … Without him, there’s a huge loss. He was the steam engine of that team. … He is an extremely skilled soccer player."

- Weeki Wachee head coach Patrick McHugh

“If you take Matt away, I don’t think the other players at Springstead make it happen. … With him, everyone on the team benefits. … He’s also a good student and is involved in the community. He refs, too. … He can easily play at the next level.”
 - Hernando head coach Andy Suarez

"Look at Matt’s stats; he was all over the place. … Probably what I liked most was he could change the pace of the game in an instant. … He’s a well-rounded kid. … Has the rare ability to get the job done at any given time. … And he’s not afraid to take charge."

-  Central head coach Alex Viramontes

"Matt has all the intangibles you want from a player. … He does all the little things well. … To me, his leadership is what stands out. He elevated the play of his teammates in every match. … He’s the guy who gives confidence to everyone to pull games out. … He was Springstead’s catalyst."

- Nature Coast head coach Ian Wald

Coach of the Year

Sal Calabrese
Springstead, 19th Year

COMMENTS: Recently retired, he is a probable future Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame selection … A multiple COY selection … Over the past 13 seasons, Calabrese has guided SHS to 12 winning campaigns … Calabrese celebrated 15 winning campaigns in 19 years at SHS … Has coached in more soccer matches (402) and earned more wins (228) than any Hernando County boys or girls soccer mentor since 1978-79 … Guided SHS to 13 Hernando County championships … Led the Eagles to seven district finals capturing two district titles … Calabrese’s teams were noted for distributing the wealth offensively and maintaining ball possession.

QUOTES: "When you have a bunch of players that buy into a season – that makes playing a lot easier. … The parents kind of left me alone. I guess I pulled the right strings. … There’s not too much grumbling when you win 19 matches. … I think the biggest thing with this team was the core group of guys we had for four years. They knew the style and they knew what was expected. … The guys bought into the system and deserve all the credit – this was their season."

- Calabrese

"Sal set the standard for all the county coaches. … Year in and year out all he does is keep winning. … I know all the (soccer) coaches look up to him. … He’s the easy choice for Coach of the Year. He had an exceptional team with exceptional players."

- Weeki Wachee head coach Patrick McHugh

"Look at what Sal has done. I don’t know where to begin. … The thing that I appreciated most was even though I came from the rival school he was so nice and helpful when I arrived as a rookie coach. He helped me fill out the schedule, gave me contact numbers for other coaches and officials. … Sal took the time to help me. That’s something I will never forget. … He’s a phenomenal guy and great mentor both on and off the pitch."

- Hernando head coach Andy Suarez

"Everyone knows he brings intensity, knowledge and a passion for the game. … He has a voice that carries. When he speaks, the boys move. … When you see his practices, they’re well-structured. There’s no wasted time. … He’s the type of guy who can bring out the best in all his players. … I had the great fortune of working with him. If you spend any time with Sal, you understand he brings a great work ethic with him. … I’m one of the countless people to say I’ve learned so much from Sal."

-  Central head coach Alex Viramontes

"Why shouldn’t Sal be Coach of the Year, again? He led Springstead to their most successful season in eight years. The kids all bought into what he was selling. He deserves anything he gets."

- Nature Coast head coach Ian Wald
