- Nature Coast head coach Lisa Masserio

Kayla Monteleagre
Defender

Springstead – Junior

COMMENTS: First-time All-County selection … In an order to shore up the leakiest Springstead defense in 13 years – or since 1998-99’s team permitted 68 goals – first-year mentor Scott Wern switched one of his fastest players and most prolific scorers (Monteleagre) to defense. The end result was three straight shutouts before being eliminated in the district semifinals by Lecanto, 4-1 … As a freshman and sophomore, Monteleagre totaled nine goals and nine assists … Enjoyed a breakout year with a career-high 15 goals … Finished as the county’s No. 4 scorer with 33 points.

- Nature Coast head coach Lisa Masserio

She has a lot of mental toughness. … She’s already a very complete player. … Does a lot of training on her own."

- Nature Coast head coach Lisa Masserio

"Has a lot of athleticism. … Watching her play she looked like a seasoned veteran – not a first-year varsity keeper. … Has an ability to get people to support her. … She commanded a lot of respect."

- Springstead head coach Scott Wern

“I saw her make a lot of Gordon Banks-type saves. … Saw that happen more than a few times. … Has great anticipation.”

Coach of the Year

Lisa Masserio
Nature Coast – 3rd Year

COMMENTS: First-time Coach of the Year selection … Went 6-7-4 and 9-10-3 in her first two years at the helm … In a record-breaking 2011-12 campaign, Coach Masserio’s troops snapped old school record of 12 victories with 17 … Lady Sharks scored a school record of 82 goals – snapping old mark of 55 in 2007-08 … NCT captured its first outright Hernando County championship – the 2007-08 club tied SHS for co-county champs … After seven straight one-and-dones in districts, NCT reached district finals against Eustis … NCT also captured a regional playoff game with a thrilling double-overtime 3-2 nod over Gainesville-Eastside.

QUOTES: "Why the success? It all started before the season. We used a different approach in our training – we were trying to be more fit. That allowed us to better deal with injuries. … We also benefitted from a great schedule. … Did a bunch of mental toughness things. … No position was taken for granted. We tried to have as much competition per position as possible. … We had a tremendous group of kids that bought into what they’re capable of doing. … It was a convincing loss to Eustis in the regional semifinal. We feel like we were three games away. I believe we still have something to prove."

- Masserio

"From coaching with her, I know she’s a good coach. She knows what she’s talking about. … At Central, we only had a few players play competitive ball outside of school – and none of them played together. At NCT, several players played outside school ball. That makes a difference."

- former Central head coach Brian Paino

"Picking Lisa is a little personal for me. My daughter (Renee) plays for her club team. What I liked most? She built a team not based on one season – she’s built a program. Her patience has paid huge dividends. …She deserves this."

- Springstead head coach Scott Wern

"She did it without having a ‘star.’ She was able to mesh everything together. … I give her credit. Every time we figured out what they were doing, she would make some great in-game adjustments. … Did a great job of preparing her team."

-  Hernando head coach Rick Ahrens
