ORLANDO - A while ago, it seemingly was a shoe-in to see a few swimmers move on to the state level out of Hernando County.

That now has become a distant memory, as no county swimmer has gone to states the past three years.

All five county programs participated in the Class 2A, Region II Meet Thursday at the YMCA Aquatic Family Center in Orlando.

Sebastian River (366 points) and Gainesville (383 points) took home the girls and boys titles, respectively.

Springstead finished in 12th place with 85 points on the boys side, and the Lady Eagles were 13th with 52 points.

Also among the boys, Weeki Wachee ended up 31st (three points) and Central 32nd (two). No other county squad tallied a team score.

The Eagles' Morgan Kiloh, seeded first in the 100-yard freestyle after tying for a district title last week, this time reached the championship final of the 200 free and placed fifth, with a time of 1:50.09.

For the girls, Springstead's Monica Surrena had the best day out of all the county participants, nabbing a fourth-place finish in the 200 free (2:01.13) and a sixth-place finish in the 500 free (5:27.21).

Only the winners in each race garnered automatic state berths. The rest must hope for at-large bids, which will be announced once all regional meets have concluded.

Any qualifiers from this meet will return to the same facility next Thursday for the 2A FHSAA Finals.
