Lots of coaches would love to feel the way Eric Milholland felt Saturday morning.
"It's a pleasant surprise," said the Nature Coast boys and girls head cross coach.
Milholland's remark may have belied an inner Cheshire cat smile.
His girls team won the Lecanto Invitational at Lecanto High School.
The Lady Sharks had 94 points and beat Lakeland-George Jenkins, which had 104 points. Tampa-Sickles was third with 105 points.
Nature Coast didn't even have a top 10 finisher. Brielle Perlingini was 12th with a 21:47 time. Mary Thomson was 17th with a 21:59.
Alyssa Deligio (19th, 22:00) and Brianna Horn (20th, 22:07) gave the Nature Coast girls four runners under 22:10, and the pack time worked in their favor.
Springstead's girls were 11th with 297 points. Hernando's girls were 18th with 456 points. Weeki Wachee did not have a team score.
The top Hernando County girl was Springstead's Tiana Newton. She was ninth with a time of 21:25.
"I can do better," she said. "It was not one of the best. The hills bothered me. It's a good race."
The Nature Coast boys were fourth with 114 points. Sarasota won with 69 points. Lutz-Steinbrenner also had 69 points, but Sarasota's seventh runner had the better time in the tiebreaker.
Springstead was ninth with 260 points. Hernando was 21st with 582 points and Weeki Wachee had no team score.
Nature Coast's Cody Van Natter was the top Hernando County finisher. He had a 12th-place finish with a 17:33.
Springstead's James Amodie was 33rd with a time of 18:22.
