Nature Coast

So far this season, Springstead hasn't had much to fret about. Through their first three meets, the Eagles defeated five different teams.

On Saturday night at the YMCA of the Suncoast Hernando County Branch, that roll continued, as Springstead swept a dual with county rival Nature Coast.

The Lady Eagles won 115-52, while the boys downed the Sharks, 109-62.

"They're working hard at practice and swimming tired and swimming well," Springstead head coach Wayne Withington said. "I'm looking forward to districts and seeing them go a lot faster."

So far, though, Withington is pleased with the progress. Collectively, his teams only dropped two races versus Nature Coast.

Sophomore Monica Surrena, the reigning Swimmer of the Year, put in her usual performance, capturing the 200-yard IM (2:31.35) and 100 fly (1:13.60).

Sara Overa took first in the 50 free (32.35), Rebecca Glidden did the same in the 500 free (6:39.13) and Melissa Fernandez swam the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.38).

Freshman Allyson Fielder continued to shine in her rookie prep campaign. As she did two weeks earlier at the same venue, she pulled out a victory in a pair of individual races, the 200 free (2:20.80) and 100 free (1:02.33).

"I feel I swam pretty good," Fielder said. "It's good to compete because I've been training hard the whole season.

"Coach pushes me really hard. He finds your limits and pushes you to go beyond them, to get even better."

"I knew she was going to be good," Withington said. "But I keep pushing her and she's getting better. I expect her to do a lot as time goes on."

Fielder, Fernandez, Surrena and Glidden combined for first in the 200-medley relay (2:21.92). Fernandez, Elizabeth Acevedo, Andrea Purvis and Overa won the 200-free relay (2:13.43).

In the 400-free relay, Fielder, Glidden, Overa and Surrena teamed for a 4:29.90, allowing Springstead to cruise to first in that one, as well.

Charlie Watson gave the Eagles a triumph in back-to-back events, the 200 free (2:04.88) and 200 IM (2:29.31).

Teammate Hunter Geisen duplicated those two wins, recording a time of 6:25.44 in the 500 free and 1:20.14 in the 100 breast.

Jake Gregory added a win the 100 free (59.60), and Morgan Kiloh was another top placer in a couple individual races – the 100 fly (1:00.55) and 100 back (1:01.86).

"I think I swam pretty good, all my best times," said Kiloh, a junior and two-time All-County selection. "It always seems like in this pool I swam my fastest.

"I'm a year-round swimmer, and my club team focuses more on long distance. My team for school, (Withington) is a really good sprints coach."

Kiloh helped Geisen, Gregory and Matthew Sundell complete the 200 medley in a first-place 2:00.03. Watson, Sundell, Gregory and Kiloh had a 3:57.92 for a victory in the 400 free.

In the 200-free relay, Geisen, Christian Makuch, Samuel Brockway and Watson pulled together for a winning 1:53.27.

The Sharks' only firsts came from Brie Perlingieri on the girls side in the 100 back (1:30.09), and Mycah Dalgarn for the boys, 1:00.45 in the 100 free.

"We swam better than we did last week. Last week we had about 15 who didn't show," Nature Coast head coach Robert Rasmussen said. "We knew Springstead was a strong and tough team to go against. My biggest thing was do our best against them.

"I have 25 freshmen, so we're building for the future. Hopefully in 2-3 years, we'll have a strong team to compete against."
